Center til Dawn: A Reflection on Being

“The first piece, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit and that the center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.”

-Black Elk

A center which cannot be found cannot be named, a world open at our feet and free for us to walk, dream, and exist within – the uninhibited nature of simply being is the ultimate strength of capacity for the human spirit. The moment of desire to wander is one with limitless possibilities; it embraces the roots of our ancients, allows for the manifestation of a new center in our minds, and prepares us to engage in a conscious act of experiencing what is still unknown.

Knowledge is acquired through sensory experience – contact, taste, smell, auditory, visual – but it is also embedded in our atoms direct from the moment of origin until an indeterminate future. All that exists in this knowledge is potential and all moments are derived from the possibility of this potential. This more primitive knowledge supplies a different kind of demand, not a response to the world around us, no reactions, no thoughts – it simply is and we simply are. The potential includes the possibility of sensory experience and the possibility of no sensory experience. It was and is and is always ready. We are travelers along potential’s path, carriers of its stories, and contributors to future narratives for those willing to listen to the beings within.

Where is your center?

What narratives do you carry?

Who are beyond the bounds of your mind?

From a sense of smallness

Comes my own sense of self, a wellness

And overwhelming wholeness

Not apart from the Creature in all other beings.

From the empowerment in this smallness,

I can sense its opposite in the massive,

And become in tune with the arrangement of the universe.

The resounding impressions of eras past,

The echo of the future pushed back,

A sense of “now” filling eternity.
